South Side Jew Boys

One of the lesser known Scottish Gangs probably because they were inactive from Sundown on a Friday night. When I first heard of them I was thinking of Yiddish gang cries echoing through the Gorbals as far as Govan, “Ben-Gurian Ya Bas”. Maybe in the past, but by the 60's their patch was in the Giffnock and Newton Mearns, mostly Sellic supporters at that time as Ibrox was then was surrounded by people selling right wing papers, just like now. I assume Parkhead is not so attractive now. (Of course Keith who supplied me with the information could have been taking the piss)

Scots take pride in the fact we never expelled the Jews from our land and there never has been state persecution of the Jews, as supported by David Daiches (Two Worlds 1956). The alternatives to this view is simple.

1. There were no Jews in Scotland until the mid 19^th century.
2. The Edict of Expulsion was enacted in 1290 when Edward was in reality the Guardian of a monarchless Scotland so any Jews here would have left.

The real incoming of Jews was in the mid 19^th century around the two main cities. The first problem for the Yiddish Jews was it seems was a wee bit of snobbery from the middle class Jews already settled here. (Lipman, 1990) Then the influx from Germany as many tried to flee the Holocaust.

The main peaks of anti Semitic occurrences were in the thirties, and forties with a lull until the modern era where the Left lead the attack on the Jewish peoples. The semantics of the Scottish Left are those of Jeremy Corbyn, the whole Good Jews Bad Jews scenario has not been questioned, despite one Sheriff's warning that it would do them well to distinguish there is a difference between a Jew in Scotland and the Israeli state and it IS UNLAWFUL to to lay the actions of that state at the feet of a single Jew in Scotland.
